FIBRE FALLOUT RETREAT

Hello,
I am the chair of the North Country Spinners FIBRE FALLOUT 2006 Retreat which will be taking place the weekend of September 29, 30 and October 1, 2006.
North Country Spinners is a guild in northwestern NJ.  The guild hosts this retreat every 2 years.  This will be our 4th one.  We are wondering if there is a way to be posted to your Happenings page on your web site.
If that is possible our retreat is FIBRE FALLOUT 2006" and the guild web site is   www.northcountryspinners.org  and the "Guild Retreat" tab brings you to our retreat info.
We have several well known fiber artists scheduled to teach our workshops.  We have Rita Buchanan, Lily Chin, Sharon Costello, Elisa Kessler Caporale, Annie Modesitt and Catherine Marchant.
If you can possibly list us it would be greatly appreciated.  The committee did not know if this is possible but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.
Thank you for your time.

The Advocacy Project

Earlier this spring, several of us from Springwater met with representatives from The Advocacy Project to discuss their work with Bosfam, a women's organization operating a weaving center in Srebrenica, Eastern Bosnia.  To read a description of this work, please visit www.advocacynet.org. Click on "Our Work."  Then, from the "Projects" column on the left of the computer screen, select "Weavers of Bosfam" for a program description and "2006 Intern: Bosfam" to read intern Yvette Barnes' blog.

Information found under "Weavers" also describes a public presentation and display, June 27, Georgetown University. Yvette hopes to have an opportunity to describe her work and the work of Bosfam to a Springwater audience when she returns.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Many thanks to everyone who supported the 2006 Super Bowl Sale in Reverse. It was very successful thanks to you.  A special thank you to the staff who worked very hard to set up the sale the afternoon before and the staff who kept things moving smoothly on Sunday. We still have many novelty yarns left and are considering innovative ways to not only sell them, but to use them in ways beyond the usual.  Any ideas?

Our Fiber Community Reprise

Our Fiber Community

Springwater Fiber Workshop is “a watering hole” for fiber artists of all kinds. To better support our fiber arts community, we sponsor five groups to enable people with similar interests to get together, share ideas, work together, and socialize. There is no cost to participate in any of them, and everyone is welcome. Read the descriptions below and learn which ones appeal to you. We look forward to having new members in all of them, so come and join us. Membership in any one or all of the groups entitles you to camaraderie, meeting new people, sharing ideas, and the ability to show off your skills and introduce them to others at our many community demonstrations if you want to participate – and at least one cheap night out.

Schedule

1st Monday               Spinning Group

2nd Monday               Knitting and Crochet Group

2nd Wednesday       Fiber Group

2nd Friday                  Felting Group

3rd Friday                  Natural Dye Group

Spinning Group (aka Fluff & Nonsense)

It’s not uncommon to drop in on the first Monday of the month and find some people spinning on portable drop spindles, charkas, and wheels of all kinds, while others are busy carding or combing their fiber in preparation for spinning. A few others might be working up (knitting, crocheting weaving) their most recently spun yarn. Most of the spinners knit, crochet, weave, tat, dye, and any other fiber art you can probably name. Members come from all walks of life with all levels of spinning skill, and everyone is welcome. The Spinning Group has been meeting at Springwater for many years.

We have no set agendas or programs, and there are no dues. We go out to places throughout the Metropolitan-area and give hands-on demonstrations as part of Springwater’s Outreach Program. We want people to experience spinning and learn where their clothing comes from. We’ve demonstrated at historical sites, several schools, community festivals, Brownie, Girl and Boy Scout meetings and camp-outs. Once we even entertained a birthday party group with spinning in a barn at an area pet farm, where we were all seeking shelter during a downpour.

Fluff & Nonsense has a website and user group too.

User Group  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fluff_and_nonsense/

POC               Betsy Davis, freyathorn@yahoo.com

If you’re interested in learning more about spinning and/or participating in our demonstrations for which we need spinners, knitters, dyers, weavers, crocheters, drop by and see what we do. POC is Sylvia DeMar, email Dempau@aol.com. You can also leave messages for Sylvia at Springwater, 703-549-3634.

Knitting and Crochet Group

The knitting group was formed about 3 years ago primarily as a support group for knitters. We’ve not only grown in size but also in scope. We routinely participate in demos, actively support various charity knitting organizations (Warm Up America, Project Linus and distribution of knitted items to local shelters and hospitals), and volunteer in outreach programs. We also represent Springwater each year in the DC Knit Out and Crochet Event. We’ve assisted with fashion shows, teaching, team knitting demos, and lots more. We also help out at the Springwater booth displaying finished items, answering questions, and conducting fun demos.

Since many knitters crochet and many crocheters knit, we have now combined the Crochet Group with the Knitting Group. All of the charities supported by the Knitting Group also heartily welcome crocheted articles as well. Who knows; perhaps “the other skill” will rub off onto you.

Speaking of skill, no special skills are necessary to join the group. Obviously, it can’t substitute for a class, but you can certainly expand your knowledge and skills by working with other knitters and crocheters. The current members encompass the entire range from novice to expert, and there is always an instructor present. So there is always someone around who can answer your questions, and there is always someone who can benefit from your knowledge.

There are no dues. The only requirement is to be an enthusiastic knitter and/or crocheter and to be prepared to share that enthusiasm with others. The group meets on the second Monday of every month from 7 to 9 PM. POC is Sue Wroton, email swroton@cox.net. The Knitting Groups’ wed address is: www.swknittinggroup.org.

Fiber Group

The Fiber Group meets the second Wednesday of the month at Springwater. It is open to anyone who loves fiber. We are an easy-going group whose members crochet, bead, knit, spin, weave, dye, tat and/or felt. Our purpose is to expand our knowledge through a variety of programs and inspire each other through sharing.

Our members take turns, singly or in pairs, presenting a topic of their choice (and bringing snacks). These programs have included: making miniature books and sharing ideas about how to use them; an introduction to needle felting by making small felted pumpkins at our most recent October meeting; beading; experience using wire for knitting, crocheting, etc; a presentation on damask fiber and how to weave it; learning about Fibonacci numbers and sharing ideas about how to use them in all of the fiber arts to enhance our product; a brainstorming session and sharing ideas about creativity and inspiration; “show and tell” of member’s personal heirlooms and collection of older fiber works.

That only covers a few of the programs we’ve enjoyed. This group only gets better and richer as the membership grows and expands in diversity. People from all fiber backgrounds are encouraged to participate, so this becomes a good place to get exposure to and learn about fiber arts that are new to you, and well as to give others a new perspective about something you know. POC is Cheryl Roesel, email croesel@verizon.net

Felting Group

“Group” is probably a misnomer for this open studio session. There are no organized programs, no attendance commitment, and no rental fees required. The studio is open for fiber enthusiasts who need long tables, a lot of space, non-carpeted easy-to-clean floors, stoves, washer, large deep sinks, and microwaves ovens that are devoted specifically to dyeing and other fiber work. Let’s face it: Our apartments and houses in this metropolitan area, though small and cozy, are very often too small to contain our creativity, without making it just too cozy for those of us who work on a grander scale.

Our facilities will accommodate wet felting, dry felting, silk fusion, and perhaps some dyeing. All you need to do is bring your supplies and help clean up afterwards. Mark the second Friday night of each month on your calendar. The studio is officially open from

7:00 – 9:30 p.m.

POC is Linda Hurt; email linda.hurt@opm.gov; 703-360-3128 (home); or leave a message at Springwater, 703-549-3634.

Natural Dye Group

The forum for this small, but dedicated group is theme-oriented. During the session, a single dye source or technique is featured, and participants are encouraged to try different methods of application. The theme for the following month is decided at this time. Springwater’s “wet” studio includes an overhead ventilation fan, stoves, washer, large deep sinks, pans, and microwave ovens that are devoted specifically to dyeing. All safety procedures are followed. All you need to do is bring your supplies, something to dye and help clean up afterwards. We have found that no two dyers (just like dyebaths) are ever quite the same. Join us the third Friday night of each month and share your experience with others. The studio is officially open from

7:00 – 9:30 p.m.

POC is Sylvia DeMar; email dempau@aol.com; 703-931-0748 (home); or leave a message at Springwater, 703-249-3634.
